• 30 States reported new cases
• 60 percent (100) of new cases were reported by five States: California (24), Louisiana (21), Massachusetts (19), New York (12) and Texas (24)
• more than half (88) of new cases were in people who identified themselves as white
• 72 percent (120) of new cases were in males
• age of individuals with new cases ranged from 6 to 93 years

In 2005, a total of 166 cases of Hansen's disease were reported in the U.S. In the last 30 years (1975-2005), 7,029 new cases have been reported. The number of cases reported per year peaked at 456 in 1983 and, since 1988, has remained relatively stable.
