LEARNING OBJECTIVES

This seminar is designed to increase the level of understanding among healthcare providers regarding the unique characteristics and current concepts in the diagnosis and treatment of Hansen’s disease (leprosy).

ATTENDEES WILL ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • NHDP mission and general concepts of Hansen’s disease
  • Biological characteristics of M. leprae
  • Pathological changes in the skin and nerves from Hansen’s disease
  • Hansen’s disease cardinal signs and the criteria for diagnosis
  • Current treatment protocols recommended for Hansen’s disease in the United States
  • Management of two types of Hansen’s disease reactions
  • Physical changes due to inflammation of the skin and nerves and secondary neuropathic changes (face, hands, feet)
  • Prevention of disability
