Who Can Apply

Public, private, and nonprofit organizations can apply for most HRSA funding opportunities. This includes community and religious organizations.

We encourage you to apply if you match what we’re looking for.

How will I know if I can apply for a specific opportunity?

Every Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) details who can apply. Search grant funding opportunities to view NOFOs.

You may need to meet certain standards. For example, specific skills or experience, cost-sharing, or matching.

What kinds of organizations may apply?

Community-based

  • Small or new
  • Faith-based

Nonprofit

With or without 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

Educational

  • Independent school districts
  • Public and state-controlled schools of higher education
  • Private schools of higher education

Government

  • State
  • Local
  • City or township
  • Special district
  • Native American tribal (whether the U.S. government recognizes your organization or not)

Are there different standards for faith-based organizations?

No.

You can compete for grant funds like any other nongovernmental organization. We decide who we fund solely on whether you can perform the work.

Using your facility
All organizations may use their facilities to provide federally funded services. There’s no need to remove or alter art, icons, literature, or other symbols.

Keeping your identity
You may keep your organizational identity. This includes your name, internal governance, and mission statements.

Discriminating against clients
You may not treat clients (or potential clients) differently or unfairly when carrying out a program we fund. Whether it’s due to:

  • Religion or religious belief
  • Refusing to hold a religious belief or take part in a religious practice

Separating activities at your facility
Client may volunteer to take part in a religious activity or service that you offer. You cannot force them to do so. And these must occur at a separate time and place from any activities and services we fund.

Do you give funding to individual people?

You cannot apply for a grant. However, if you’re a health care professional, you can apply for one of our loan repayment or scholarship programs.
