How to Acknowledge Federal Funding

You must state when your work product uses funds from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Congress requires this through annual appropriations.

What you must include

  • Who funded the product (in this case, HRSA and HHS)
  • Award amount
  • Percentage of federal funding to total costs
  • Disclaimer stating that it’s your content and HRSA and HHS do not endorse it

Use HHS’s sample text

The HHS Administrative and National Policy Requirements (PDF - 371 KB) provides sample text for you to use:

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) provided financial support for this [project / publication / website / etc.]. The award provided [XX%] of total costs and totaled [$XX]. The contents are those of the author. They may not reflect the policies of HRSA, HHS, or the U.S. Government.

Review frequently asked questions

Can we include our grant number in the acknowledgment statement?

We recommend following the HHS sample language. The sample does not include the grant number.

Does “award totaling $XX” refer to an annual or total award amount?

The law does not state which amount to use. We recommend using the annual award amount. This is the amount for the budget period (usually twelve months), not the period of performance.

Is the annual award amount the base award amount? Or should it include any supplements or carryovers on the most recent Notice of Award (NoA)?

You should include all funds approved for the budget period. You can view this in the most recent NoA at the time you published the work product.

Should the statement reflect the specific cost of the publication where it appears?

No. You do not have to calculate the precise cost of developing the document.

We developed our work product with another HRSA award recipient. How should we calculate the amount?

Since we support both, you should change “award” to “awards” and list them separately.

Do we have to use the HHS sample language?

HHS drafted the sample to help you comply with the requirements. If you wish to use different language, you may consult with your project officer (PO) to ensure it complies with the law. You can find your PO’s contact information listed in item #10 on your NoA.

Do I need to update statements for products already posted?

No, you do not. The statement should reflect the most recent NoA for the budget period when you published the product.

Do acknowledgment requirements still apply after the period of performance ends?

Yes. It still applies after the period of performance.
