What We Do

What is HRSA's Role in the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)?

We support PEPFAR to deliver on its goal of an AIDS-free generation. Our Office of Special Health Initiatives, Office of Global Health, implements the agency's PEPFAR activities. The global HIV/AIDS activities began in 2001 and expanded in 2003 after the enactment of PEPFAR.

Since 2003, we have been a significant contributor to PEPFAR's achievements. Our work builds on the agency’s domestic and global experience. Our focus is improving outcomes in treatment and prevention for people living with HIV.

Our work is guided by our experience building and strengthening the United States health system. Leading the U.S. response to the HIV epidemic, we ensure that everyone living with HIV receives comprehensive treatment.

What Does HRSA's Global PEPFAR Mission Focus On?

  1. Quality: supporting the delivery of quality HIV/AIDS care and treatment services
  2. Access: providing training and technical assistance to build and strengthen all levels of the health sector
  3. Partnership: collaborating to build skills and support host countries and local organizations
  4. Workforce Strengthening: preparing a strong health care workforce across service providers.
